Why are there no hats in school?
One reason hats are banned is because it is a distraction. How could a hat be a distraction? Students are allowed to wear bracelets in school and some of them are brightly colored and could easily become a distraction, but they are not banned. Another excuse for banning hats is it’s disrespectful to wear hats indoors.

Years later, when I was an adult volunteering in schools, the reason hats were banned because hats were synonymous with gangs. Cowboy hats (definitely a gang in my high school) got in the way and dared anyone to knock them off. Kids would swap hats, steal hats while bullying, try on hats for the fun of it.
Why are ripped jeans not allowed in school?
It is unfair to punish students for holes in their jeans when those same students are allowed to wear more revealing shorts and skirts. Bates also said that school is for learning, and torn jeans could cause a distraction because students pull on the strings of the hole and make it even bigger.
