Is a GoTo telescope worth it?

Posted on 2020-06-15 By Aman Kelley

Is a GoTo telescope worth it?

Good GoTo telescopes make astrophotography very accessible and enjoyable, especially with the addition of cameras and other kits. As opposed to manual scopes, GoTos can be used for long exposure astrophotography.

Can a GoTo mount be used manually?

With the Nexstar 8SE (and 6SE), yes, as long as you use the drives, powered by batteries or other power supply, to move the scope via the hand controller. So it’s not very convenient but can be done.

Which mount is best for astrophotography?

Best Sky-Watcher Mounts for Astrophotography EQ6 Pro – Top overall but hard to find in 2022 and superseded by the EQ6-R Pro. NEQ6 – A discontinued mount superseded by the EQ6-R Pro. HEQ5 – Available and detailed above. A great option with a 30 lbs payload capacity.

What is a GoTo mount?

In amateur astronomy, “GoTo” refers to a type of telescope mount and related software that can automatically point a telescope at astronomical objects that the user selects. Both axes of a GoTo mount are driven by a motor and controlled by a computer.

How do you use a GoTo telescope?

Simply set up the telescope, look up at the sky and find a bright star, any star, and point the telescope at it. Then select another, and finally a third. The telescope automatically calculates which stars you selected and aligns the telescope quickly and correctly.

Can you use a computerized telescope manually?

No, you must use the hand controller to move the telescope. There are no clutches present to allow manual movement. The hand controller is used to fine tune the location of an object. Do you find this helpful?

What is an equatorial mount for a telescope?

An equatorial mount is a mount for instruments that compensates for Earth’s rotation by having one rotational axis parallel to the Earth’s axis of rotation. This type of mount is used for astronomical telescopes and cameras.

How do equatorial mounts work?

An equatorial mount has one rotational axis parallel to the Earth’s axis of rotation. This design allows the attached instrument (your camera or telescope) to stay fixed on a celestial object by driving one axis at a constant speed.

Does a GOTO mount track?

On the other hand, dim objects can be readily photographed with long exposures using a DSLR camera attached to a small telescope, and a good-quality GOTO mount will find and track your target while your camera works. As objects cross the night sky, they slowly rotate clockwise at the same time.

Do I need an equatorial mount?

An equatorial mount solves this problem. It can perfectly track the stars as they move during the night, and you only need to adjust one axis. Of course, if you want to do any long-exposure photography, like longer than a few minutes in a photo, you absolutely have to have an equatorial mount.

What are the types of telescope mounts?

There are two basic types of equatorial mounts: German Equatorial Mount. Both Newtonian Reflectors and Refractor telescopes normally use this type mount. The German Equatorial mount’s distinguishing feature is the large counterweight extending on the opposite side from the telescope.

What type of telescope is most similar to an optical telescope?

The telescope itself works quite similar to the refracting telescope, as in it also gathers light and focuses it to form an image. The refracting telescope and the reflecting telescope are the two most common types of telescopes used.

What is telescope box?

Definition of telescope box. : a two-piece box in which the sides of one part fit over those of the other.

What is telescope mirror?

A mirror (referred to as the primary mirror) is placed in the bottom of the telescope and reflects the image back toward the top. A much smaller mirror is placed on the inside of the telescope, about one-quarter of the way from the top. This mirror reflects the image through an eyepiece placed on the side of the telescope.
