What is proximal end in biology?

Posted on 2019-11-05 By Aman Kelley

What is proximal end in biology?

Proximal means nearer to the center (trunk of the body) or to the point of attachment to the body. If another reference point is given, such as the heart, the proximal point of another organ or extremity is the point closest to the heart, central rather than peripheral. Proximal is the opposite of distal.

What is the meaning of proximal end and distal end?

In medicine, it refers to parts of the body further away from the center. For example, the hand is distal to the shoulder. Distal is the opposite of proximal. Distal refers to distance, while proximal indicates proximity.

What is the distal end?

Distal: The more (or most) distant of two (or more) things. For example, the distal end of the femur (the thigh bone) is the end down by the knee; the end more distant from the torso. The opposite of distal is proximal.

What is proximally and distally?

The terms proximal and distal are used in structures that are considered to have a beginning and an end (such as the upper limb, lower limb and blood vessels). They describe the position of a structure with reference to its origin – proximal means closer to its origin, distal means further away.

Which is proximal end of filament?

The proximal (closer to) end of the filament is attached to the thalamus or petal and distal (away from) end is attached to the anther.

What is anterior and posterior?

Directional Terms Anterior or ventral – front (example, the kneecap is located on the anterior side of the leg). Posterior or dorsal – back (example, the shoulder blades are located on the posterior side of the body).

What is medial and lateral?

A lateral orientation is a position away from the midline of the body. For instance, the arms are lateral to the chest, and the ears are lateral to the head. A medial orientation is a position toward the midline of the body. An example of medial orientation is the eyes, which are medial to the ears on the head.

What does distally mean in medical terms?

(DIS-tul) In medicine, refers to a part of the body that is farther away from the center of the body than another part. For example, the fingers are distal to the shoulder. The opposite is proximal.

What connects filament to anther?

The sterile tissue between the lobes is called the connective, an extension of the filament containing conducting strands. It can be seen as an extension on the dorsal side of the anther. A pollen grain develops from a microspore in the microsporangium and contains the male gametophyte.

Which end of flower attaches to filament?

proximal end
The proximal end of the filament is attached to the anther and distal end is attached to either to the thalamus or petal.

What is the proximal end of the forearm called?

The ulna is both longer and larger than the radius, and at its upper end, also known as the proximal end, the ulna forms the elbow joint. The radius’ connection to the elbow is what allows the forearm to move separately from the upper arm.

What does proximal means?

( anatomy, geology) Closer to the point of attachment or observation.

  • ( dentistry) Facing toward another tooth. The proximal surfaces of a tooth are those that touch or are close to neighboring teeth.
  • ( linguistics) Closer to the speaker.
  • What is the proximal end of the tibia?

The proximal tibia is the upper portion of the bone where it widens to help form the knee joint. In addition to the broken bone, soft tissues (skin, muscle, nerves, blood vessels, and ligaments) may be injured at the time of the fracture. Both the broken bone and any soft-tissue injuries must be treated together.

    What is medial and distal?

Distal. The medial malleolus is a bony projection continuing inferiorly on the medial aspect of the tibia. It articulates with the tarsal bones to form part of the ankle joint. On the posterior surface of the tibia, there is a groove through which the tendon of tibialis posterior passes. Laterally is the fibular notch,…
