What do you need for Suminagashi?
To make suminagashi marble paper, you’ll need the following:
- Two calligraphy brushes (like those in the picture)
- Two cups (preferably not cups that you use for drinking)
- Sumi ink (available at some art stores and online)
- Dishwashing liquid.
- Thick paper (traditionally, suminagashi paper was rice paper)
- Tap water.
Can you use acrylic ink for Suminagashi?
You can craft your own style of suminagashi paper by using acrylic paint instead of ink. The paint will be dispersed and patterns will be formed when turpentine is added to water. You can use thin paper, such as rice or lightweight watercolor paper, to complete your project.
Can you do Suminagashi on fabric?
Suminagashi might be considered to be the simplest form of marbling – but on fabric, not so much! The process consists of floating inks on water. No size is required, in other words no thickening of the water – just water. The inks are separated either with another colour of ink or using a dispersant.
